How to Prepare for Motorcycle Season

Gorgeous riding weather is just around the corner, which means it’s time for Ontario riders to prepare for motorcycle season. Being prepared is all about knowing how to stay safe!

With riding weather around the corner and summer on its way, it is important all motorcycle riders inform their selves on how ways to stay safe.  New and seasoned riders will all get something out of the following motorcycle safety measures.  

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

When you are shopping for a motorcycle bike, be sure to start with one that fits you.  When you are seated, you should be able to rest both feet flat on the ground easily (not on the tip of your toes). Choose a model that’s easy for you to get on and off the center stand and remember, if it feels too heavy, then it probably is. 

Antilock Brakes Are a Good Investment

Antilock brakes have proven to be a lifesaver and are available in a wide variety of models.  Motorcycles equipped with ABS brakes are 37% less likely to be involved in a fatal crash because they help you retain steering control during an emergency stop.  ABS brakes are especially valuable in slippery conditions.  Adding ABS brakes to your motorcycle may cost you a little more, they’re a worthwhile investment to keep you safe. 

Try a Motorcycle Safety Course

Taking a motorcycle safety course is imperative to help keep you safe and will help to make you a confident rider. Such courses offer a variety of techniques, from the basics to advanced, making them beneficial for every rider. Dress Appropriately

It is important to wear clothing and gear that will help protect you from wind chill, debris and road rash, should slide out.  For maximum protection, the best clothing includes leather or a reinforced jacket, gloves, full pants and over the ankle footwear, even in the summer.  For warmer weather, there are specially designed jackets with rugged padding and breakable mesh.  It is also imperative to wear effective eye protection; don’t rely on eyeglasses or a bike’s windscreen.  Use a helmet visor or goggles.  Furthermore, consider wearing bright colours so that you are more visible to other vehicles on the road. Drive Defensively

Always keep an eye out for cars that suddenly change lanes our pull out from side streets. It is also important to keep a safe distance between you and other vehicles to ensure you have enough stopping distance and enough time to react to obstacles on the road.   A motorcycle has less contact with the pavement than a car so sand, wet leaves or pebbles can cause a bike to slide unexpectedly.  Bumps and potholes can also pose a serious threat when on a bike.  If you can’t avoid them, slow down as much as possible with minimal steering input. 

Check Out Your Bike

Before each ride, walk around your motorcycle to make sure the lights, horn and directional signals are working properly.  You should also check the chain, belt, brakes and inspect the tires for wear.  You also want to be sure your tires are set at the proper pressure.  Not maintaining your bike increases safety risks so regular maintenance will help to keep you safe.
